The breathtaking Kalaoa Creek Ranch spans 1,419 acres, rising gently up the slope of Mauna Kea above Onomea Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii, with expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Starting at approximately 600 feet above sea level, the ranch’s upper reaches end in Saligna and Koa tree forest at about 1,500 feet. The ranch is steeped in Hawaiian history, having formerly been the Onomea Sugar Company, gifted to the Onomea plantation owners by King Kamehameha. The future owner of the property will be only the ranch’s third after the king. The Kalaoa Creek Ranch is defined by the Hanawi Stream on the northern border and the Ka’ie’ie Stream on the southern border. The further upland, mauka (mountain-side) reaches of the property transition into forest, while the makai (ocean-side) edges border ranchettes and homes that are closer to the Hawaii Belt Road. From the eastern boundary at Indian Tree Road to the upper reaches is approximately 2.1 miles, and from the ranch’s southern tip to the northernmost point is approximately 1.2 miles. There are six access points onto the ranch for direct accessibility to a future home site, crop, and livestock transport.
The land’s undulating ridges are ideally suited for agricultural development, currently supporting 500 head of cattle. Cane haul roads with solid ten-foot foundations, built by the Onomea Sugar Company, run throughout the property. Open grasslands are intersected by rain-fed streams with magnificent private waterfalls and swimming holes. This unique property is completely fenced and ready to support horses and cattle. With the abundant rainfall on the upper portions of the ranch and stream culverts, the property is ideally suited to sustainable crops. With no currently existing buildings, the land offers a variety of potential building sites boasting outstanding vistas of Hilo Bay and Mauna Kea. Breathtaking waterfalls and swimming holes are right in the back yard. All of these fantastic sites are secluded from the adjoining neighbors, allowing many different opportunities to select the perfect estate location. As the largest undeveloped parcel in all of the North Hilo area, Kalaoa Creek Ranch is a true gem of Hawaii. It offers not only exclusive privacy, but also allows its owners to experience the grandeur of Hawaii. The ranch offers easy access to Hilo and Hilo International Airport. Owning a property this large, with exclusive privacy, and easy accessibility, as well as sustainable farming and agriculture capabilities, is a rare opportunity on the island of Hawaii.
Location and Access
The ranch sits approximately 8 miles north of Hilo on Highway 19, the Mamalahoa Highway known as the Hawaii Belt Road, and approximately 1 mile north of Papaikou Village. The ranch has six different access points on the south, east and north of the property via four separate easement roads coming off the Belt Highway — Onohi Loop Road, Indian Tree Road, Kalaoa Camp Road, and Kaieie Road. Once on the property from any of these access points, cane haul roads crisscross the property for easy access to the entire property. Hanawi Stream extends across the northerly portion of the ranch and has numerous tributaries feeding into the steam. The Hanawi Stream boasts two waterfalls, which are particularly majestic after upland rainfall. Incorporating catchment systems to utilize the abundant rainfall will enable a constant supply of water for agriculture, livestock and residential use. There are views of the top of Mauna Kea to the west, Mauna Loa’s famous eruptions to the south, the city of Hilo to the east, and vast expanses of the Pacific Ocean to the north and east. Kalaoa Creek Ranch is situated near the famous Wakai Falls Park and nearby the historic towns of Papaikou and Pepeekeo.
The ranch is safely outside of the island’s flood and lava hazard zones, and the prevailing onshore breezes keep volcanic smoke drifting to the west and away from the ranch. The soil consists of well-drained silty clay Keam, which is ideal for ranching or farming. The ranch is within the Agriculture State Land Use District and is zoned A-20A, Agriculture. One farm lot, not geographically specified, allows for the development of a house or lodge with ancillary farm outbuildings.
The Kalaoa Creek Ranch currently has a lease to run over 500 head of cattle, generating its own independent positive cash flow. The Ranch has additional ongoing ginger cultivation, as well as wild watercress growing in the spring.
The Kalaoa Creek Ranch offers a unique combination of accessibility and privacy on the historic Big Island of Hawaii. Located just eight miles north of Hilo and ten miles north of the Hilo International Airport and rising gently above the Mamalahoa Highway, Kalaoa Creek Ranch boasts sweeping views of Hilo Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
